The story

Five cowboys hold a shrinking desert water hole against riders closing in, and the sunbaked palette makes you feel the thirst. Remington painted it for Collier's, which paid him to deliver a Western scene every month.

About the painter

Painter · 1861–1909

Remington spent a short stretch on a Kansas ranch, then made the action pictures magazines wanted of the West. The late nocturnes are the quieter ones.
