The story

Bierstadt painted this six-foot canvas in his Rome studio and toured it through Europe to lure settlers and investors west. Its golden light is more dream than geography, and that's why it sold.

About the painter

Painter · 1830–1902

Bierstadt painted the western mountains in a Rome studio and sent the canvases on tour. The light was the advertisement.
