The story

Russell painted dozens of buffalo hunts as a lament for the herds and the Plains nations who depended on them. By the time he painted this one, fewer than a thousand wild bison were left.

About the photographer

1864–1926

Russell worked as a cowboy in Montana for eleven years before he painted full time. The saloon, the camp, and the hunt in this line come from that life.

The size you order is the photograph. A framed print adds a 2.5 inch mat and the moulding, so the outside is larger than the print. Canvas is the face size, with a 1.5 inch edge that does not add to the front.
