The story
Russell lived among the Blood (Kainai) people in Canada in 1888 and painted daily camp life from memory. This piece shows women leading a family's travois, an act of skill and authority within Plains life.
About the painter
Painter · 1864–1926
Russell worked as a cowboy in Montana for eleven years before he painted full time. The saloon, the camp, and the hunt in this line come from that life.
