The story
On May 10, 1869, at Promontory Summit in the Utah Territory, the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific met. Samuel S. Montague and Grenville M. Dodge shook hands between the locomotives, and a ceremonial spike was driven to finish the first transcontinental railroad. Andrew J. Russell made the photograph.
