The story
On January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy took the oath on the East Front of the Capitol and delivered his inaugural address in the cold. He was forty-three, the youngest person ever elected president, and he asked Americans to ask what they could do for their country. The portrait was made later, by Cecil Stoughton in the Oval Office, on July 11, 1963.
