The story

Thomas Crawford sculpted the Statue of Freedom. The Architect of the Capitol dates the bronze 1863 and gives its height as 19 feet 6 inches. Carol M. Highsmith photographed it on the Capitol dome. The Library of Congress dates that transparency between 1980 and 2006 (item 2011633046, reproduction LC-DIG-highsm-14852) and states there are no known restrictions on publication. A note on the same record says that on May 9, 1993, after almost 130 years in place, the bronze was removed by helicopter for restoration because of pitting and corrosion. Philip Reid, enslaved in Clark Mills's foundry, had helped cast the figure in 1860–62. The story of that work is linked on this print.

About the sculptor

Sculptor · died 1857

Sculptor of the Statue of Freedom. The Architect of the Capitol writes that Crawford, born in New York City, kept a studio in Rome and died in 1857, before his plaster model left that studio. Clark Mills cast the bronze in Washington. Philip Reid, an enslaved artisan in Mills's foundry, worked on the cast. The bronze figure is dated 1863.
