The story

A narrow-gauge train stands on the Denver & Rio Grande line beside the rapids of the Animas River, with snow on the San Juan Mountains behind. The Denver & Rio Grande built the 45-mile Durango-to-Silverton line in 1881–82, in just over nine months, to haul ore from the San Juan mines; the first train reached Silverton in July 1882. The rails are three feet apart (narrow gauge), which allowed tighter curves and cheaper construction in the mountains, and up the steep Animas Canyon the track runs along a rock ledge just wide enough to carry the train. The line climbs more than 2,500 feet over its 45 miles. After World War II its business shifted to tourism, and it still runs as the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad; it is a National Historic Landmark (1961) and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. William Henry Jackson made the photograph; Detroit Publishing Co. made the color with the Swiss photochrom process, printing a black-and-white negative through a separate lithographic stone for each color.
