The story

Civil War photographer O'Sullivan joined the Wheeler survey and hauled a darkroom wagon into Diné (Navajo) country. Canyon de Chelly is still Diné land today, home to families who farm the canyon floor.

About the photographer

1840–1882

O'Sullivan photographed the Civil War, then the Wheeler survey west of the hundredth meridian. In 1873 he took a darkroom wagon to the head of Canyon de Chelly.

The size you order is the photograph. A framed print adds a 2.5 inch mat and the moulding, so the outside is larger than the print. Canvas is the face size, with a 1.5 inch edge that does not add to the front.
