The story

A boy in a wide-brimmed cowboy hat and patterned neckerchief watches the rodeo from the crowd. A chin cord holds the hat; he wears a shirt with rolled cuffs and dark bib overalls and stands among the grown-ups, looking off to the right, while men in hats sit and stand behind him and one at the left holds a folded paper. Russell Lee made the photograph at the rodeo of the San Angelo Fat Stock Show in San Angelo, Texas (Tom Green County), in March 1940, where the caption card reads "Youngster in cowboy costume watching the rodeo at the San Angelo Fat Stock Show, San Angelo, Texas," and he made The Rodeo Clown Gets a Laugh at the same San Angelo Fat Stock Show rodeo; the 35 mm nitrate negative came to the Library of Congress in 1944 with the FSA/OWI collection.

About the photographer

Photographer · 1903–1986

Russell Lee worked for the Farm Security Administration with a patient eye for crowds. At a San Angelo rodeo he turned away from the arena and caught one man laughing. At the Pie Town fair in 1940 he photographed the rodeo itself, and the calves driven in for roping.
