The dog gets off

Dog Gets Off the Bus, 1943 (Esther Bubley). A stray hopped onto a Greyhound bus at a rest stop between Cincinnati and Chicago.

Esther Bubley was riding Greyhound buses for the Office of War Information, photographing the people who shared the seats. At a rest stop between Cincinnati and Chicago a stray hopped on. One passenger refused to sit with the dog and put it off. Bubley caught the standoff: the aisle, the man, the animal that was not going to Chicago. It is a war photograph with no uniform in the punchline. The country was moving, the bus was full, and there was still time to argue about a dog. The print carries that, and nothing invented after it.
