The story
Two long-haired dogs sit on quilts and bedding piled in the open trunk of a car. One looks off to the left and the other rests with its head turned right, on a heap tied with rope, parked on a street in front of a brick building with white-framed windows and doors. Russell Lee made the photograph in Sheridan, Montana, Madison County, in October 1942; the caption card reads Sheridan, Montana, shepherder's dog in the rear of an automobile, and the negative came to the Library of Congress in 1944 from the Office of War Information as part of the FSA/OWI collection.
About the photographer
Photographer · 1903–1986
Russell Lee worked for the Farm Security Administration with a patient eye for crowds. At a San Angelo rodeo he turned away from the arena and caught one man laughing. At the Pie Town fair in 1940 he photographed the rodeo itself, and the calves driven in for roping.
