The story
Children in paper masks and pointed party hats crowd together under an open wooden roof. Some wear a domino mask or pale paper masks and tall pointed paper hats, others are bare-faced in caps, overalls and checked coats, and several hold cups, with grown-ups in hats behind them and a man's arm at the right edge. Dorothea Lange made the photograph at a Halloween party at the Shafter migrant camp in Shafter, California (Kern County); the caption card is dated November 1938 and reads "Halloween party at Shafter migrant camp, California," and the negative came to the Library of Congress in 1944 with the FSA/OWI collection.
