The story

Frissell shot this for Harper's Bazaar in 1948. On 4x5 color film, the model stands at low tide on rippled sand with her shadow stretched long beside her, towel and straw bag in hand. Frissell, a former Vogue staffer who taught herself photography, pulled fashion out of the studio and onto real beaches, shooting from low and far so the setting did half the work.

About the photographer

Toni Frissell left the fashion studio for beaches, pools, and boats, and gave her archive to the Library of Congress. Every Frissell print here comes from an original negative or transparency held by the Library of Congress, which lists no known restrictions on publication.

Size guide

Sizes follow this picture. A framed print adds the mat and the moulding, so the outside is larger than the sheet. Canvas is the face size, with a 1.5 inch edge that does not add to the front.
